Sulapac’s sustainable skincare packaging had tattoo aftercare brand sold from the first minute

Take a look how a unique indie brand was born to offer high-quality, certified organic aftercare products for tattooed skin.

“When we found Sulapac, we didn’t even have to consider other packaging options – it was a perfect match for us,” says Manuel Camacho.

Manik Skincare – an organic and herbal tattoo aftercare brand – was born as a side project by Hamburg-based visual design and branding entrepreneurs Manou and Mik Rahner, and Manuel Camacho.

With the sustainability commitment of the three founders, The Herbal Tattoo Series, consisting of a balm and a bar of soap, was developed for people with strong environmental and self-care values.

“Sustainability is one of the most important criteria in our product development, from the raw materials to the packaging. The real value of our products lies not only in the benefits for the user but also in avoiding any harm to the environment. Ecology before economy, environmental protection before profit – that is our mantra,” says Manou Rahner.

The brand was adamant that their skincare packaging had to be recyclable and it needed to biodegrade without leaving permanent microplastics behind. Hence, Manik Skincare chose industrially compostable* Sulapac® Nordic Collection by Quadpack. Supporting circular economy, this Sulapac’s award-winning, bio-based packaging material is made from FSC-certified wood chips from industrial waste streams and plant-based materials.

*Industrially compostable according to EN 13432. Please check local recycling instructions.

Sulapac’s sustainable materials are beautiful and functional. Like nature. The material mimics the beauty, usability and circularity of nature: just like a piece of wood, jars made of Sulapac’s material biodegrade without leaving behind permanent microplastics.

The unmatched combination of sustainability, functionality and luxury aesthetics make Sulapac an ideal solution for forerunner cosmetics brands striving to use more eco-friendly packaging for their products.

Only the highest quality of ingredients and skincare packaging

Also working as a tattoo artist, Mik Rahner wanted to offer his clients high-quality aftercare products, but nothing on the market was both effective, organic and sustainably packaged. With vegan cosmetics strongly on the rise, there was a gap in the market for a new kind of tattoo aftercare product.

“Regular aftercare products are okay but did not truly meet the criteria I had in mind. The three of us sat down to put together the concept of Manik Skincare , and then we began to work on recipes. It took us two years to develop the two vegan products, using selected medicinal herbs and plant oils,” says Mik Rahner.

The tattooing process breaks the outer layer of the skin and it takes about a few weeks and up to a month for tattooed skin to heal fully. Manik Skincare believes in the power of nature: using selected healing herbs to support the regenerative process of the skin.

Only the highest quality ingredients, local production and sustainable skincare packaging were options for the brand. Manik Skincare products have been hand-crafted from high-quality organic raw materials – without palm oil, genetic engineering, parabens, alcohol or synthetic ingredients.

With cosmetics, a relaxing and pleasant user experience comes equally from the product itself and the packaging that the product comes in. In addition to the high sustainability standards that Sulapac meets, the sensuous feel of the ceramic-like material complimented the gentle skincare product in a natural way. The brand’s tattoo balm is protected by a black jar, made of Sulapac’s material, decorated on top with a screen-printed botanical design.

“People using it can feel that it’s not conventional plastic. It feels different and it looks beautiful. We have seen several people react with delight to this packaging because it stands out so much – it’s beautiful! We don’t need to convince people of its quality, all they need is to just hold the tattoo balm jar in their hands,” says Manou Rahner.

Manik Skincare also reflects a change in tattoo culture.

“Environmentally conscious people of course have a wide array of tattoo styles adorning their bodies from old school to geometric styles. In recent years, nature-oriented ornamental tattoos have increased heavily in popularity. It makes perfect sense that tattoo enthusiasts also want products that support their values,” says Mik Rahner.
