Nordic consumer brand challenges plastic cutting boards: “Less microplastic pollution, same convenience”

Consumers are concerned about using plastic cutting boards, particularly due to microplastics that shed from them. As there hasn’t been an easy-to-care alternative available, plastic boards have remained a kitchen staple. This is about to change, promises Finnish brand BÖNDE Board, which has launched a bio-based and dishwasher-safe cutting board made of Sulapac material.

HELSINKI, 9 June 2026

The idea of BÖNDE Board was born in the founder’s kitchen. Petri Nyländen, a Helsinki-based entrepreneur and father of two, wanted to get rid of conventional plastic cutting boards but there was no good replacement available. Wooden cutting boards were all nice but he needed a product that could be conveniently washed in a dishwasher without constant worrying about microplastics.

Fuelled by his entrepreneurial spirit Nyländen started an intensive development process resulting in a biobased, dishwasher-proof cutting board that leaves no permanent microplastic behind. The material of the board has been developed by Sulapac Ltd, a pioneer in biobased biodegradable plastic replacement materials, known for its collaboration with iconic brands such as CHANEL and Marimekko.

“Sulapac convinces with its scientific background, impressive line of customers, and commitment to provide sustainable material alternatives that are also high-performing and unique,” Nyländen says.

Sulapac, which is initially known for its wood-composites for the cosmetic industry, launched its first material for reusable applications in 2023. “We thought that safe and sustainable material alternatives should not be limited to single-use items and disposable packaging,” says Dr. Heidi Peltola, Chief Product Officer at Sulapac and the lead scientist behind the reusable material innovation.

“Today, we’re pleased to see both HORECA sector companies and consumer brands adopting Sulapac for their reusable products with extremely positive feedback from consumers,” Peltola notes.

According to Peltola and Nyländen, reducing the burden of permanent microplastics and advancing the use of renewable raw materials are of high priority – especially in kitchenware and tableware, as “nobody wants oil-based plastic in their food”.

While the material choice is a crucial part of BÖNDE Board’s value proposition, the brand speaks to consumers also through its practical and minimalistic design, authenticity, and Nordic roots. In Finnish language ‘bönde’ refers to ‘countryside’ or a person living there. It is also used as a synonym to ‘summer cabin’, where most Finns head to wind down and reconnect with nature – and themselves. “The countryside – or bönde – is a place where memories are made and which reminds us what truly matters, and that’s where BÖNDE draws inspiration from,” explains Nyländen.
